The 365 Day Film Challenge #1-5

Found this challenge on Tumblr and I have decided to try it. So far, I have seen 19 films and have briefly reviewed them.

365 Film Challenge: 1/365 - Red Riding Hood 2011
★★☆☆
Cinematography was beautiful but that’s the only redeeming quality of this film. They’ve turned this fairytale into some angsty, teen, Twilight knock off (which makes sense because the director of this did direct the first Twilight) The acting was atrocious and not even the great Gary Oldman could save this film. If you want to watch Amanda Seyfried looking doe eyed for an hour and 40 minutes then this is the film for you. Don’t expect to find any depth or even care once the film is over.

365  Film Challenge: 2/365- Crazy Heart
★★★★
Not a country fan, but I still thought this was a very good movie. Not something I would see over and over again, but still very well made. I loved Jeff Bridges and I can see why he won the Best Actor award. Maggie Gyllenhaal is superb and she had great chemistry with Jeff. And WOAH! Was not expecting Colin Ferrell to make an appearance. I totally forgot that he has a connection to country music! These kind of movies aren’t my cup of tea, but this was a impressive movie.

365 Film Challenge: 3/365- How Do You Know?
★★
I mean what can I say? It’s a cute Romantic Dramedy. Predictable but there is some sweetness which I liked. There was a moment that had me choke up a tiny bit (which is rare because I NEVER do that) Overall, it wasn’t anything special or stand out. Watching Reese Witherspoon’s blonde little head be lit up by back lighting while she looks gorgeous in every scene made me feel like a slob at best. Paul Rudd played his straight man role and Owen Wilson was the oblivious golden boy that he tends to fall into. So, not a bad film, but in the end pretty forgettable and boring.

365 Film Challenge: 4/365- A Dangerous Method
★★ 1/2 ☆
So, I tried watching this online and the quality was REALLY shitty. It was choppy and everything. I got the gist of what was happening, but I know I’m going to have to re-watch this on DVD. Overall, I found this movie boring. I took AP Psychology so I knew some of the terminology, but this was a real snoozer. I adore Michael Fassbender, but this was not one of his better films (It’s not bad as Angel but nowhere near as good as Fish Tank) Both Viggo and Michael were great and I wish the movie delved more into their relationship. As for Keira I can’t decide. A part of me wants to say she wasn’t that good and tred way to hard (as my friend calls it her “jaw acting”) Another part of me wants to say she played the part like she was suppose too. I mean, home girl had the case of the crazies (hysteria) and Knightley was going above and beyond. Overacting? I don’t know. I would give this a 3.5 out of 5. I appreciate what the film was trying to do, but overall it didn’t do much for me.

365 Film Challenge: 5/365- Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
★★ 1/2
SPOILERS
As expected the sequel to the new steam punk revamped Sherlock Holmes was entertaining at best. Not as good as the first one, but overall it was a solid follow up. It did get boring at parts and at times it was a bit hard to follow what was going on (probably because I was exhausted and needed a nap.) In my opinion, Noomi was not needed and just like Rachel McAdams in the first film before, served no purpose. I guess it’s hard to focus on female influences when the bromance that is the Watson/Holmes dynamic is hotter than the back side of a scorching skillet. Once again, the chemistry between Law and Downey is the star of the show. You are excited when they have scenes together! When Holmes tosses Watson’s new wife out of the moving train you’re like “Thank, God! Now they can do what they do best.” You just don’t want any side characters (especially females) joining their little group of two because it interrupts the bond between the two friends. So, the film did it’s job. It kept me entertained and the suspense did hold my attention. However, I hope for more action scenes in the 3rd film.  Oh, and Guy can we lay off the super slow motion? It’s cool, but after awhile it does get tiresome, love.
